There is nothing more sensual than a finger-food dining experience.
The awareness of food is heightened when the sense of touch is involved. Feeling the wet heat or the firm chill of your dish in your fingers before perceiving the flavor on your tongue adds a corporeal dimension unparalleled by conventional dining with utensils. Feeling your food in your hands connects you to your fare in a very primal way. That is why most foods like oysters and strawberries are considered aphrodisiacs!
Although finger-foods can be enjoyed at the table in a regular dining setting, as most appetizers do not necessitate utensils, changing the feast setting to an outdoor or indoor picnic amplifies the primeval naturalness of the act.
Last night my boyfriend and I laid down a faux bearskin hearthrug in front of my wood-burning fireplace and experimented with a menu of various finger-foods.
Suffice it to say, the meal conveyed a very sexual vibe. I highly recommend this dining experience to a couple that wants to enjoy a cozy night in. And I recommend you do it barefoot.
We started the meal with an appetizer of Steamed Red Curry and Coconut Mussels,
followed by an entrée of Chicken Souvlaki with Tzatziki Sauce.
Our desert consisted of Chocolate-Dipped Strawberries.

While I prepared the food and my man built us a nice fire – which I am sure, as anthropology of the domicile would suggest, is what a cave man and woman would have done – we enjoyed a beer apéritif: AleSmith IPA.
TIP: For appetizing purposes, stick with a dry and light beverage like champagne, a dry red or white wine, or a pale lager (blonde) beer such as Amsterdam Natural Blonde or Innis & Gunn Blonde. Limit yourself to 2 drinks before dinner, so as to whet the appetite, not to sate it.
This Strawberry-Rhubarb Champagne Cocktail pairs well with the strawberry desert, and it is just the right amount of sweet to serve as a digestif.
Use this experiment as an excuse to indulge a little with your drinking. After all the theme here is pure, unadulterated hedonism. Besides, the more inebriated you become, the easier it is to feel like a food connoisseur.
Be sure to savor your meal. Relish the experience of handing your food. And of course don’t forget to enjoy the best part of eating with your hands: licking your fingers!
